Dog Treat Recipes for International Dog Day
If you are a dog lover, you may already know that 26 August is International Dog Day. This annual event takes place every year on 26 August, and is a global celebration of all things canine and also strives to encourage the adoption of dogs who need homes. While we believe everyday should be a celebration of your animals we thought we would use this opportunity to share some easy and cost effective ways to show your pup you care.
They say the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, and this is doubly true for dogs. Dog treats are a great way to show our furry friends when they’ve been a good boy or girl, or to reward and reinforce good behaviour. However, there are many brands of doggie treats on the market and it can be difficult to discern which ones are made from healthy ingredients or are suitable for your pup. That’s why we’ve put together this list of organic dog treat recipes that you can make at home, so you can have more control over how you spoil your best friend.
HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREAT RECIPE
If there’s one thing dog’s love, it’s peanut butter and this clever recipe combines this old favourite ingredient with a bacon and peanut butter glaze. If you’re new to the world of homemade dog treat recipes, or even to baking in general, this might seem like a lot of work, but the recipe can be finished in less than an hour including baking time and makes 30 (large) dog treats so it’s worth the labour. Always use Xylitol free peanut butter in your dog treat recipes, Xylitol can be toxic to dogs.
NO BAKE DOG TREAT RECIPE
If the idea of standing in front of the oven to bake dog biscuits is a bridge too far, or if you would like to try something a little simpler, we found this great No Bake Dog Treat Recipe. This recipe combines peanut butter (we told you dogs love peanut butter), banana, honey and yoghurt. The ingredients are simply blended together, placed in a mould (an ice tray will do) and then frozen, it’s that easy. And the best part is that because it is a frozen treat you can store it in the freezer and take one out whenever you need.
VEGETARIAN DOG BISCUITS
Unless otherwise specified by your vet, dog’s should have a balanced diet that gives them the protein they need, but also provides all the vitamins and minerals required to keep them healthy. These homemade vegetarian dog biscuits are a great way to give your pup the extra nutrients that may be missing from their store bought pet food. As an added bonus these treats contain fresh parsley, which will help with any bad breath your dog might have.
BACON FAT DOG TREATS
Here’s a treat that’s a bit richer than the previous entries. This simple recipe uses wheat germ, egg and (the secret ingredient) bacon fat to create a snack your dog will love. While bacon fat might not seem like the healthiest ingredient, in moderation fats should form a part of their diet, so just be sure to not let your pup overindulge.
APPLE AND CHEDDAR DOG BISCUITS
Think of this treat as a healthy cheese platter for your dog. Although these treats are barley and oatmeal based they use grated cheddar cheese and apple sauce to deliver on flavour. Apples are generally very good for dogs, as they are an excellent source of Vitamins A and C and help clean your dog’s teeth. These treats will keep for up to two weeks after you’ve made them.
If we’re honest, your dog doesn’t care too much how his or her dog treats look but if you are someone who takes their baking seriously, we would suggest purchasing a dog bone cookie cutter to help make your doggie treats Instagram worthy.
If you are making following any dog treat recipes at home it is important to remember that every dog is different. You should speak to your veterinarian about any allergies or dietary considerations your dog might have before giving them any sort of treat, whether it is store bought or homemade.
